Today in my prayer I reflect on the first half of the theme verse for this week: “He even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
Lord, we pray that just as You caused the deaf to hear during Your pilgrimage on this earth, that You would cause Your Church to hear today. Open her deaf ears, that she may receive Your Word to her. Let her hear Your gospel faithfully, receiving and believing Your Word to her. May this Word continually convert her to You and renew the hearts of her many members.
We pray that at the center of efforts for Christian unity would be a new reception, a faithful re-reception of Your gospel. May we hear Your Word afresh, and in it find life more abundant–that eternal life that is received in communion with Your Son. We ask also that Your Church would hear Your Word of judgment upon her, and that, enabled by Your Spirit, each day she would repent and receive Your life anew.
May Your Church, Lord, hear Your call to discipleship in the way of the Cross. May she hear the call to take up that Cross and imitate her Lord along that long, arduous road that–unthinkably–leads to life. Guide Your Church in her pilgrimage and ever call her to follow You. May she be Your faithful servant as You shepherd her home, even to the end of this age.
All these things we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
