The Goal of Knowledge

Some great words of wisdom, and words I need to hear more often than not. From the 12th-century mystic Bernard of Clairvaux:

There are many who seek knowledge for the sake of knowledge: that is curiosity. There are others who desire to know in order that they may themselves be known: that is vanity. Others seek knowledge in order to sell it: that is dishonorable. And again there are still others who seek knowledge in order to be edified: that is prudence. But there are also some who seek knowledge in order to edify others: that is love. (Pieper, Scholasticism, 89; slightly modified.)
